Higgs — Mexican Hat from SPT Phase
Spontaneous symmetry breaking: vacuum picks the trough |φ| = v ≈ 246 GeV.
Read full derivationSPT Model
The Mexican-hat Higgs potential is a small-amplitude expansion of the SPT phase-coupling potential V(φ) = −λ cos(φ/φ₀). Around the trough, V looks like −μ²|φ|² + λ_4|φ|⁴. The vacuum picks the trough |φ| = v ≈ 246 GeV; gauge bosons eat the Goldstones and acquire masses; the radial fluctuation is the 125 GeV Higgs.
SPT phase potential
Periodic phase coupling on the membrane. λ has dimensions of GeV⁴; φ₀ sets the VEV scale (≈ 246 GeV).
Taylor expansion → Mexican hat
Identify μ² = λ/(2 φ₀²) and the quartic λ_4. Standard SM Higgs Lagrangian recovered.
Higgs mass
λ = 0.12905 (≡ m_H²/(2v²)), v = 246.22 GeV → m_H = 125.10 GeV (ATLAS+CMS combined).
W boson mass
g = 0.6536, v = 246.22 → m_W = 80.4 GeV. PDG: 80.369 GeV.
Z boson mass
g, g' from SU(2)×U(1) couplings → m_Z = 91.2 GeV. PDG: 91.1876 GeV.
Weinberg angle
PDG on-shell: 0.22290. SPT prediction matches to 0.1 %.
