Neutrino — Oscillation & Mass Ordering

PMNS mixing from lepton cascade depths: ν_α → ν_β as each mode drifts in phase.

SPT Model

Neutrinos oscillate because the flavour eigenstates (e, μ, τ) are not the same as the mass eigenstates (ν₁, ν₂, ν₃). On the SPT membrane, the PMNS rotation arises from cascade-depth phase mixing between the three lepton generations: a state created as ν_μ is a superposition of ν₁, ν₂, ν₃ that drifts in phase as it propagates, and that phase shift converts it back into a different flavour mixture.

Oscillation probability (3-flavour)

P (ν_{α} \to ν_{β}) = i \sum U_{α i} e^{- i m_{i}^{2} L / (2 E)} U_{β i}^{*}^{2}

U is the PMNS mixing matrix; m_i are mass eigenvalues; L baseline; E energy.

Two-flavour reduction

P (ν_{μ} \to ν_{e}) = sin^{2} (2 θ_{13}) sin^{2} (2 θ_{23}) sin^{2} (1.27 Δ m_{31}^{2} L / E)

Drives T2K appearance signal. With θ_13 = 8.6°, gives ~5% probability at L/E ≈ 500 km/GeV.

PMNS angles (PDG NuFIT 2024)

θ_{12} = 33. 4^{\circ}, θ_{23} = 49. 0^{\circ}, θ_{13} = 8.5 4^{\circ}

Cascade-depth differences yield these angles from membrane geometry: small θ_13 = small lepton-cascade overlap.

Mass-squared splittings

Δ m_{21}^{2} = 7.42 \times 1 0^{- 5} eV^{2}, Δ m_{31}^{2} = 2.515 \times 1 0^{- 3} eV^{2}

Solar (small) and atmospheric (large) splittings. Hierarchy ratio ≈ 33.

Mass ordering — normal

m_{1} < m_{2} < m_{3}

SPT predicts NORMAL ordering. JUNO / DUNE will confirm or falsify by 2030.

MSW (matter-enhanced) survival

P_{ee}^{solar} \approx \frac{1}{2} (1 + cos (2 θ_{12}^{eff}))

In the Sun's core, electron density modifies θ_12 → θ_12^eff. Predicts P_ee ≈ 0.34 at solar-neutrino energies.
