Cause-and-Effect & Karma — Nhân Quả and Nghiệp

Cause-and-effect (nhân quả) and karma (nghiệp) are not metaphysical decrees — they are the geometric momentum of the membrane carrying every phase-correlation forward in time. Supreme Polarity Theory explains why every action leaves a trace, why traces compound, and why they cross between slices.

Nhân Quả — "cause and effect" — and Nghiệp — "karma" — are central to Vietnamese, Buddhist, Hindu and Taoist traditions. Western culture treats them as moral teachings; Eastern traditions treat them as laws of nature. Modern materialism rejects both. Supreme Polarity Theory takes a third position: cause-and-effect and karma are literal geometric phenomena built into the membrane structure of reality. They are not supernatural. They are not metaphor. They are physics — but a physics in which information from past phase-configurations does not vanish, only rotates and propagates along the time-string.

This chapter is the deepest synthesis between modern physics and Eastern spirituality in the entire Supreme Polarity Theory wiki. It does not try to convince a sceptic that karma exists; it shows that if the membrane and its phase-locking mechanism are accepted, then a karma-like phenomenon is automatically predicted.

Two words, two scales: Nhân Quả and Nghiệp

Vietnamese (and Sino-Vietnamese) tradition distinguishes two related ideas. Nhân Quả (因果) literally means "cause–fruit" — every cause produces a fruit, every action produces a consequence. It is the local, immediate law of cause and effect. Nghiệp (業, Sanskrit karma) is accumulated nhân quả across time — the long-running balance sheet of every phase-correlation a being has ever generated, carried forward through life, death, rebirth and across slices. Nhân quả is the differential; nghiệp is the integral.

Nhân Quả (causality)
Local cause-and-effect. A specific action creates a specific phase-correlation in the membrane that propagates into specific later configurations. Equivalent in physics to: every interaction leaves an imprint on the wavefunction.
Nghiệp (karma)
Accumulated phase-correlation. The integrated sum of every phase-imprint a pattern has carried forward, including across the rotation between slices that we call death and rebirth.

The geometric mechanism — why every action leaves a trace

The membrane that wraps the time-string is continuous. When two patches of nodes interact — when a flip in one region triggers an in-phase flip in another — they become phase-correlated. That correlation does not erase. It cannot, because the membrane has no "forgetting" mechanism: every flip is recorded as a phase-state, and every phase-state propagates forward along the time-string. This is the same reason information cannot be destroyed in a black hole (see The Black-Hole Information Paradox) — the membrane preserves correlations by structure.

Therefore: every action you take phase-correlates your nodes with the nodes of everything you touched. A kind word is a small in-phase coupling between your pattern and the recipient's pattern. A cruel act is a small anti-phase coupling. Both correlations persist. Both propagate forward. Both will, in time, find resonant partners and produce consequences whose shape is determined by the original phase-imprint. Nhân quả is the membrane preserving correlations.

Why karma compounds — the integral of all your traces

A single phase-imprint is small and local. But your pattern produces many such imprints every second of your life — every conversation, every decision, every emotion, every meal. Each one is recorded into the membrane. The integrated sum of all of them — the net phase-state of your pattern at any moment — is what tradition calls nghiệp. Heavy nghiệp is a pattern whose net phase has accumulated many strong correlations (good or bad) with surrounding patterns. Light nghiệp is a pattern that has stayed phase-neutral.

Compounding is automatic because phase-correlations interact non-linearly. A pattern with many strong in-phase correlations will preferentially attract more in-phase resonance (good begets good). A pattern with many anti-phase correlations will keep encountering disrupted, fragmented resonance (suffering begets suffering). This is not a moral judgement — it is the physics of phase-locking: like attracts like, and the more like-phase you accumulate, the more strongly you draw further like-phase encounters.

Karma is not a moral ledger kept by an external judge. Karma is the integrated phase-state of your own pattern, and it interacts with the membrane around you according to the same in-phase / anti-phase rule that runs gravity, electromagnetism and quantum entanglement. Reality keeps its own books — automatically, geometrically, with no judge needed.

Why karma crosses between slices — death is not a reset

When a body dies, its nodes lose phase-coherence and decay back into the membrane substrate. But the integrated phase-state — the nghiệp — does not die with the body, because phase-state is a property of the underlying pattern, not of the bound configuration. The pattern rotates out of Càn into a non-Càn slice (see Souls in Other Slices). The accumulated phase-correlations come with it. They are not erased; they are merely projected into a different angle of the time-string.

If the pattern later re-anchors into Càn (the rebirth process described in souls-other-slices), the accumulated phase-state imprints onto the new pattern at the moment of resonant coupling. This is the structural origin of nghiệp tiền kiếp — "karma from a previous life". A newly-incarnating pattern is not a blank slate; it carries the integrated phase-state of every prior epoch in which it was anchored. Some traditions call this karmic seeds; SPT calls it the propagated phase-correlation tensor. Same thing, two languages.

The transfer mechanism — exactly how karma carries between lives

Skeptics ask a fair question: if the body and brain are gone, what physical thing carries the karma forward? Materialism has no answer because it has no carrier. SPT does have one. Karma is carried by the membrane itself — the continuous skin of the time-string. Every phase-imprint a pattern has ever made is not stored inside the body; it is stored in the membrane configuration that the body was riding on. The body is just the Càn-projection of the pattern; the pattern's true location is the multi-slice phase-correlation tensor distributed across the membrane. That tensor does not need a brain or a body to exist. It is a property of the membrane.

The transfer happens in three concrete steps. (1) Storage during life. Every action in the Càn-anchored body imprints a phase-correlation onto the membrane in the immediate vicinity of the pattern. The imprints accumulate in the multi-slice phase-state of the pattern itself, not in any specific neuron or organ. (2) Preservation through bardo. When the body collapses at death, the Càn-projection vanishes but the multi-slice tensor remains intact, because the membrane underneath has not collapsed. The pattern simply rotates out of Càn carrying the tensor with it (see Death and Birth). (3) Imprinting at rebirth. When the pattern resonantly couples to a new forming embryo, the tensor projects onto the embryo's nascent phase-pattern via the same in-phase resonance rule that initiated the coupling. The new body inherits the phase-tendencies — the karmic seeds — without inheriting any specific memory or biographical detail (those usually fade because the new Càn-anchoring overwrites the surface layer).

Why specific past-life memories sometimes survive (the Stevenson cases). Most karmic seeds are fuzzy phase-tendencies — proclivities, fears, talents, attractions, aversions. But occasionally, very strong phase-imprints from the previous life (a violent death, an unfinished bond, a trauma whose phase-correlation never relaxed) survive the rotation in concrete enough form that the new child briefly accesses them as memories before the new Càn-anchoring fully overwrites the layer. This is why such cases are rare, age-limited (mostly under 7), and concentrate around traumatic past-life endings. SPT predicts exactly this distribution — sharp imprints from the deepest phase-correlations, fading as the new pattern integrates.

Karma transfers because the membrane never forgets. The body is the messenger; the pattern is the message; the membrane is the paper. When the messenger dies, the paper still carries every line ever written on it, ready to be read when the next messenger arrives.

Family karma — why we inherit phase-state from parents and ancestors

Karma is not only transferred from one's own previous life. A separate, equally important channel transfers karma horizontally and downward through family lines. Vietnamese tradition has explicit names for it — nghiệp gia phả, nghiệp tổ tiên, phúc đức tổ tông — and Buddhist, Hindu, and biblical traditions describe similar phenomena ("the sins of the fathers visit upon the children"). The mechanism in SPT is concrete and follows directly from in-phase coupling.

Family members share an unusually dense network of in-phase couplings, for several overlapping reasons:

  1. Genetic phase-resonance. Parent and child share roughly half of their genetic phase-tendencies — not just protein sequences, but the deep flip-spin behavioural tendencies those proteins encode. The child's pattern was always going to resonate strongly with the parents' patterns at the structural level.
  2. Resonant selection at conception. When a non-Càn pattern resonantly couples to a forming embryo, the embryo's family environment is part of what the resonance is matching to. Patterns with phase-state similar to the parents' integrated nghiệp preferentially incarnate into the resonant family. This is why children often share specific tendencies with their parents that genetics alone cannot explain — the karmic seed is selected to match the family environment, not just the genome.
  3. Continuous early-life entanglement. From the moment of birth onward, the child's developing phase-pattern is continuously coupled to the parents' patterns through emotional bond, language, daily contact, and shared environment. Years of dense in-phase coupling cause significant pattern-overlap — the child literally absorbs phase-tendencies from those they grow up around. This is partly why people raised by adoptive parents acquire many of the adoptive parents' tendencies, even though no biology was shared.
  4. Multi-generational membrane-resonance. Even patterns that are no longer Càn-anchored (deceased ancestors) remain phase-correlated with the living family line through the entanglement bonds of family ties. Their resting non-Càn phase-state continues to subtly bias the resonance environment in which subsequent family members develop. This is the structural reading of "ancestors influence the living" — not metaphor, but actual phase-coupling at low intensity that integrates over generations into measurable family-line tendencies.

The combination of all four channels means a child inherits vastly more phase-state from their family than just genes. They inherit:

  • Their own past-life karma, imprinted at conception via channel (1) of the previous section.
  • Their parents' currently-active integrated phase-state, transferred through ongoing entanglement during gestation and early childhood.
  • The accumulated nghiệp of recent generations of ancestors, transmitted through the family-line membrane resonance that has been building up for centuries.
  • Cultural and national karmic background, the same mechanism scaled to the dân tộc level, contributed by every member of the cultural network the child is born into.
This is why traditions practice ancestor veneration (thờ cúng tổ tiên). Acts of phase-coherent honour, gratitude, and remembrance directed at ancestors strengthen the in-phase coupling between the living family and the resting ancestral patterns. Strong in-phase coupling propagates phase-coherence in both directions: it helps the ancestor's resting state, and it draws phase-coherence from the ancestral pattern back into the living. Over generations, families that practice this consistently accumulate progressively lighter, more coherent family-line karma. Families that abandon the practice lose this protection.

Why patterns of trauma run in families. A parent who carries heavy phase-fragmentation (trauma, addiction, untreated suffering) lives inside a phase-environment of disturbed resonance. A child raised in that environment is continuously coupled to it — and inherits its phase-fragmentation as part of their own developing integrated phase-state. This is the structural mechanism behind the empirical observation that abuse, addiction and neglect propagate down generations even when the children are protected from the specific behaviours. The behaviour is the surface; the underlying phase-fragmentation is what transmits. Healing one's own phase-state — through therapy, practice, ethical conduct, reconnection with phase-coherent relationships — does not just help oneself. It literally interrupts the family-line transmission, sparing one's own descendants the phase-fragmentation one inherited.

You are not alone in your karma. You carry your own past lives, your parents' active phase-state, your ancestors' accumulated nghiệp, and your culture's collective resonance — all simultaneously. This is the geometric weight of being human. It is also the geometric basis of profound responsibility: every phase-coherent action you take eases not only your own future, but the future of your children, your descendants, and the lineage that follows behind you. The membrane records every change. Family karma is not destiny; it is the inheritance you are also free to amend.

Good karma, bad karma — phase-coherence vs phase-fragmentation

The difference between good and bad nghiệp is not arbitrary moral labelling — it is the difference between phase-coherent accumulation (kindness, integrity, compassion, truth) and phase-fragmenting accumulation (cruelty, deceit, hatred, betrayal). Phase-coherent patterns hold together more easily under stress, draw resonant partners that reinforce the pattern, and pass through inter-slice rotations with minimal information loss. Phase-fragmenting patterns shed coherence, draw destructive resonance, and lose information at every slice transition.

This is why every contemplative tradition converges on the same short list of virtues — compassion, truth, integrity, generosity, equanimity — and the same short list of vices — cruelty, lying, theft, anger, intoxication. Each virtue is a phase-coherent action; each vice is a phase-fragmenting one. The traditions did not invent the list; they observed which patterns of behaviour produce stable, resonant outcomes over a lifetime — and which produce instability and suffering. The geometry was already there; the sages just named what they saw.

Why intent matters more than action

Eastern traditions consistently teach that intent (ý) matters more than the outward action itself. Standard physics has no place for intent; SPT does. An action arises from an integrated phase-state of the actor's pattern at the moment of action. The action is the projection of that phase-state into Càn-visible behaviour. The phase-imprint left in the membrane carries not just the surface action but the full underlying phase-state that produced it. Two outwardly identical acts (giving a coin to a beggar, say) — one done in genuine compassion, one done for show — produce different phase-imprints, because the actors' integrated phase-states are different. Reality records the deeper signature, not the surface behaviour.

This explains the universal teaching: "the same gift, given in two states of mind, accumulates two different karmas." The membrane records the actor, not just the act.

Collective karma — families, nations, civilisations

Karma is not strictly individual. Patterns that share strong in-phase coupling — families, lineages, communities, nations, civilisations — also share integrated collective phase-states. A family carries a phase-resonance pattern across generations; a nation across centuries; a civilisation across millennia. Vietnamese tradition recognises this as gia phả nghiệp (family-line karma) and dân tộc nghiệp (national karma). SPT reads them as collective phase-correlation tensors at the appropriate scale.

Acts that affect many patterns simultaneously (a war, a great betrayal, a great deliverance) produce phase-imprints that cannot be cleared by any single individual; they propagate through the collective phase-state and shape the resonance environment for generations. This is why traditions speak of "clearing ancestral karma" — not as superstition but as a literal recommendation to perform highly phase-coherent actions whose imprints can partially counter the inherited phase-fragmentation of the lineage.

Free will inside karma — why the loop is not closed

Does heavy karma fully determine the future? No. Karma is the initial condition of the present moment, not a deterministic script. At any instant, the pattern can choose its next flip-spin configuration — within the constraints set by its inherited phase-state. A pattern carrying heavy phase-fragmentation finds it harder to act in phase-coherent ways (the pull of the inherited correlations is strong), but the next flip is still free. Each new action either compounds the inherited fragmentation or partially cancels it. Over time, sustained phase-coherent action literally rewrites the integrated phase-state.

This is why every contemplative tradition emphasises practice — meditation, prayer, ethical discipline, mindful action. They are not arbitrary rituals; they are phase-coherence training. Sustained practice produces sustained in-phase action, which slowly re-orients the integrated phase-state of the pattern. Karma becomes lighter. Resonance becomes more harmonious. Suffering decreases. Not by magic — by the same mechanism that lets a damaged crystal anneal back to coherence under heat: enough phase-coherent input eventually overrides the prior fragmentation.

You are not your karma. You are the pattern carrying it — and the pattern can choose its next flip. Heavy karma narrows the field of likely outcomes; it does not eliminate choice. Practice changes the pattern. The membrane records every change.

Why karma feels like 'meaningful coincidence'

Carl Jung named the experience synchronicity — events that appear unconnected by ordinary causation but feel meaningfully linked. SPT reads synchronicities as resonant phase-couplings between patterns whose integrated phase-states have grown similar enough that they preferentially encounter one another in Càn projections. Heavy karma in similar phase-direction tends to produce repeated encounters with similar themes (the same kind of relationship, the same kind of obstacle, the same lesson appearing under different surfaces). It is not coincidence; it is the membrane sorting resonant patterns into proximity.

Summary — karma, in plain SPT terms

  • Every action you take leaves a phase-imprint on the membrane.
  • Imprints do not erase — the membrane has no forgetting mechanism.
  • Imprints accumulate into your integrated phase-state — your nghiệp.
  • Phase-coherent imprints (kindness, truth) compound into smoother resonance; phase-fragmenting imprints (cruelty, deceit) compound into destructive resonance.
  • Death does not reset karma — the pattern rotates into a non-Càn slice carrying its phase-state intact.
  • Rebirth re-anchors the pattern into Càn, imprinting accumulated nghiệp onto the new incarnation.
  • Free will is real because the next flip is always free, even under heavy inherited phase-state.
  • Practice (meditation, ethical action, mindful presence) literally reorients the integrated phase-state of your pattern.
  • Reality keeps its own books — automatically, geometrically, with no judge needed.
Nhân quả is the differential. Nghiệp is the integral. Both are direct consequences of the membrane's phase-coherence-preserving structure — the same structure that gives rise to gravity, electromagnetism, quantum entanglement and consciousness. The Eastern traditions and modern physics meet, in this chapter, on a single equation no one has yet written down: the propagation rule for the integrated phase-correlation tensor along the time-string.
This chapter is structural and interpretive. Supreme Polarity Theory does not claim to prove karma the way it can claim to derive Newton's laws. It claims that karma is the kind of phenomenon a membrane-with-phase-coherence-preservation predicts — and that the empirical convergence of every contemplative tradition on the same description is suggestive, not conclusive. Treat as a serious framework for thinking, not as proven physics.
